Oklahoma - where the roads are really bad!
Another day of eating up some miles. We left Texas (though not before passing this wonderful Cathedral to Gasoline on Route 66):
We stopped at the Old Town and Route 66 museum in Elk City, Oklahoma (and also at a supermarket across the road which didn’t seem to have changed since 1960 and where they not only took your trolley off you and put your groceries on the conveyor themselves they also tried to insist on pushing the trolley to the RV afterwards).
An Oklahoma couple we met at an RV park warned us that the interstate across Oklahoma was bad – and they were right. It was a bumpy day. Which didn’t help poor Daughter-One when (would you believe it) she started throwing up. Then Bernard followed immediately afterwards. They had both shared a smoothie from a certain juice bar at a mall in Oklahoma City and without going into the gory details it was clear that was the culprit. Obviously our bodies are not up to fighting off the strange bugs swirling about in the community here – although you would think we were in some Third World or tropical country rather than the USA. Even the laptop seems to have picked up a virus. Poor Daughter-One always gets food poisoning when we travel – probably because at home I cook everything from scratch and I am mad about food hygiene so her poor stomach doesn’t know what hits it once she starts eating fast food or anything dodgy. Clearly I should have feed her more dirt as a baby.
So we made it to a dusty RV park outside Fort Smith, Arkansas and all went to bed when Daughter-Two did at 8pm. It was a very hot and dry night and hard to believe we were frolicking in the snow just a couple of days ago. Everyone was walking around in t-shirts and singlets. But it was cold in the night and we woke up to put on the heating, and this morning the sky is heavy with snow clouds. The SatNav does not like this at all, but in usual fashion rather than admit defeat she sent us down a cul-de-sac in an apartment complex as we tried to find our way onto the interstate. But we are on the road to Memphis now. Leaving Route 66 behind.
Happy Birthday...sounds like you are having an interesting trip...sorry to hear about all the tummy troubles! Say hi to Elvis :)
