1. We made a quick visit to Grey Lynn park on Saturday, since it has the best flying fox (aka zip line) in town. Sadly when we got there the flying fox was gone. No doubt vandalised.
"Oh dear" Said Daughter-Two, "that's no good. But look, a skateboard ramp and maybe they'll let me borrow their skateboards!"
I looked over to where a bunch of guys in their late teens/early 20s were slouching and crouching around the skateboard ramp, hoodies pulled low over baseball caps as they sucked on joints and drank beer.
There followed a short but much needed lesson on the fact there are some people in the world you shouldn't approach and on some of the signs that help you pick them out. I felt a bit like David Attenborough or some other TV naturalist, muttering "and here we have a typical bunch of hoodies, in their characteristic markings and postures".
We went instead to Gribblehurst Park and found a functional flying fox
2. I have no idea why they are called "Flying Foxes" in New Zealand and Australia, but wikipedia tells me that in South Africa they are called "Foofy Slides". Which makes even less sense if you ask me.
3. On Sunday we went to the Avondale Market and I found out where everyone in the city was.
The malls are never crowded like this. (That's Daughter-Two forging a path for us):

I also found out where people buy the frankly unfortunate clothes you see on lots of kids around here these days. This is what happens when polyester breeds unchecked:

Bani Ribbat anyone? (Google tells me Bani Rabbit is a Singaporean "Hello Kitty" wannabee brand.. ):

We didn't partake of any of the food on offer:

Nor any of the political/religious advice available:

However, we did buy some vegetables and some socks. But not this lovely picture of demonic looking dolls. I am so boring.

4. Years ago when you raised the idea of allergies, doctors would look at you in that eyebrow raised condescending way they must receive special training in . And I hate being the troublesome person with the wierd diet. Things have changed now, but I still remember what it was like - plus I have got lazy AND Daughter-One loves baking gluten free goodies for me - so I haven't been as strict as I should have been with my food. But now I have got my come uppance, with a summons from the specialist (knew I shouldn't have gone for that blood test!) and a report from the allergy clinic on Daughter-Two that means a few changes around here. Not just highly allergic to dairy and not able to have gluten (as we already knew), she's also allergic to shellfish, fish, apples, peanuts, soy, grass, dustmites, pollen and cats. So the cat is living in the basement, and the endless washing and dusting continues. No more apple juice or peanut butter, and I will have to hunt out the special allergy cook books. On the upside her skin is looking better already and the sniffles and sneezes are lessening. Meanwhile I am living on brown rice, vegetables, homemade vege soup, lean meat and fruit and feeling very virtuous. The Husband keeps asking "is that nice" and I say "um .. it's nice feeling virtuous". Actually I do feel a LOT better (not to mention thinner) even after a week of the new regime. Let's hope the blood tests agree.
5. A sneak peek of the new kit coming to the store at Designer Digitals this weekend:

And a couple of layouts just for fun:
